Diljit Dosanjh's Career Origins Explained: Age, First Songs, and the Decisions That Made Him
The bridge between performing in village rooms at 16 and selling out Vancouver’s BC Place or touring historic arenas across the United States is rooted in live performance work ethic. In Punjab's live performance circuit, known as akharas, singers perform for hours over inconsistent sound equipment in front of hyper-critical rural crowds.
Dosanjh spent years mastering that environment. That groundwork directly informed his 2023 performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, where he made history as the first Indian artist to perform at the festival entirely in Punjabi. Rather than diluting his style for an international audience, he wore traditional attire, addressed the crowd in his native language, and commanded the desert stage with the ease of an artist with twenty years of live seasoning.
His 2024 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon followed the same creative formula. Singing "G.O.A.T." and "Born to Shine," Dosanjh refused to conform to Western pop expectations. He used his platform to highlight his roots, demonstrating that global relevance no longer requires shedding regional identity.
