Everything You Need to Know About Tyler, the Creator on His Birthday: Full Bio & Faq
Tyler Okonma grew up moving between Hawthorne and Ladera Heights in southwestern Los Angeles County. Raised primarily by his mother, Bonita Smith, alongside his sister, Tyler spent his childhood as an obsessive consumer of graphic design, skateboarding videos, and eclectic soundscapes. Long before streaming platforms altered listener habits, he spent hours designing fake album covers and tracklists for imaginary records inside his school notebooks.
By age sixteen, Okonma laid the foundation for the musical collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Gifted Children (OFWGKTA). Alongside teenage collaborators Earl Sweatshirt, Frank Ocean, Syd, and Hodgy Beats, Tyler established a chaotic, DIY sonic movement out of Syd’s parents' home studio in South Los Angeles. When his self-released debut mixtape Bastard dropped in December 2009, it sounded unlike anything else on West Coast commercial radio: guttural bass lines, frantic piano arpeggios, and visceral lyricism delivered in an unnerving baritone.
The turning point arrived in February 2011 with the viral music video for "Yonkers." Directed by Tyler under the pseudonym Wolf Haley, the minimalist black-and-white clip gathered millions of views overnight. MTV, traditional labels, and European festival promoters scrambled to sign a skater who had zero interest in their advice. Odd Future rejected the polished sheen of late-2000s commercial rap, swapping studio engineers for free Tumblr blogs and merchandise pop-up shops.
