Managing 1 Bitch and 9 Pups: Step-by-Step Whelping Room Setup and Care Log
In large litters, weaker pups are easily edged aside. Fading puppy syndrome describes a rapid decline occurring within the first two weeks of life. The causes range from undetected congenital defects to hypothermia, sepsis, and insufficient milk intake.
Healthy neonates stay quiet, plump, and warm. They sleep in bundles and search out teats with purposeful rooting movements. Fading puppies act entirely differently:
They isolate themselves in corners of the box. They cry out continuously with high-pitched, piercing whines. They present limp muscle tone, cold paw pads, and dry, bluish gums. If an isolated pup stops nursing and displays an absent suckle reflex, tube feeding with a French-gauge catheter and oral dextrose administration becomes an immediate medical emergency. Immediate fluid support, slow external rewarming, and veterinary diagnostics provide the only defense against litter mortality.
